Carnage Magnet Middle Begins Positive Behavior Support

We are excited about the Positive Behavior Support (PBS) program we are implementing at Carnage Middle this year.  Over seventy Wake County schools are currently involved in the PBS program.  Implementation of PBS will begin by utilizing the “Start On Time” program.  Several Wake County schools have implemented “Start On Time” with great success.  The “Start On Time” program will allow teachers to begin class immediately after the tardy bell rings and avoid losing valuable instructional time to address students who arrive late to class.  “Start On Time” will begin on Monday, September 17, 2007.  During the first three days of the program, students will be given a warning if they are late to class.  Then on Thursday, September 20, 2007, students will receive a lunch detention each time they are tardy to class.

The procedures for the program are as follows.

·         When the tardy bell sounds, classroom teachers will shut their doors.

·         Teachers will not allow students to leave the classroom for any reason for the first ten minutes of the class period.  If there is an emergency, an administrator will be called to assist.

·         Non-teaching staff members will “sweep” their assigned hallways for students who are in the hallways or restrooms without a pass.

·         Students who are not in class and do not have an appropriate hall pass when the bell sounds will be detained and given a lunch detention form.  This includes tardies to first period.

·         Students will show their lunch detention form to their teacher to be admitted to class.

·         The student will be assigned lunch detention for the next school day.  If the student is absent, they must serve the lunch detention the next day they are in school.

·         Students who do not serve lunch detention will be given in-school suspension (ISS).

·         The student will be assigned after-school detention (ASD) for the fourth and fifth tardy.

·         On the sixth tardy, the student will be assigned one day of ISS.  Additional tardies will result in additional days of ISS or OSS.

·         All students will serve lunch detention in room 2211, which is near the cafeteria.

·         Students must report directly to room 2211 when they are dismissed to go to lunch.

·         All students serving lunch detention will receive a bag lunch and may not enter the cafeteria or obtain any food from the cafeteria.

We encourage you to review these procedures with your child and make sure they understand that they must arrive to class on time.  Students should also make sure they bring all of their materials to class since they will not be allowed to return to their lockers after the bell sounds.

We thank you in advance for your support and assistance as we implement the PBS program.  We are confident that PBS will enhance the learning environment at Carnage Magnet Middle School and ensure that every child has every opportunity to achieve the highest academic success.
